What actually causes stick drift?
A standard analog stick reads its position with a small carbon potentiometer. The carbon track wears down and picks up dust with use, so it starts sending a movement signal even when the stick is centered — that is the drift. It is normal mechanical wear on a heavily used part, not something you broke, and it affects every brand of standard controller.
Can you just clean it, or does the stick need replacing?
We can try cleaning the potentiometer with contact cleaner, and on a mild, early case that sometimes helps for a while. But once the carbon track is worn, cleaning is a temporary fix and the drift usually comes back. The lasting repair is replacing the analog-stick module on the board, which we desolder and swap.
What is a Hall-effect stick and does it really stop drift?
A Hall-effect stick senses position with magnets instead of a physical carbon track, so there is no wearing contact to break down — which is the root cause of drift. Fitting Hall-effect modules is the closest thing to a permanent fix, and it is why we offer it for people who are tired of replacing controllers.
