Laptops fail differently from desktops, and the physical faults are the ones we see most at our Manchester bench. A lid that creaks, pops, or suddenly flops loose is a hinge fault: on plastic-chassis laptops the hinge screws anchor into brass inserts that tear out of the lid or palmrest, and opening the machine one-handed from a corner speeds it up — caught early it is a rebuild of the mounts, left alone the flexing lid starts cutting into the display cable and turns a small job into a screen repair. A trackpad that stops clicking or sits proud of the case, or a bottom cover that no longer sits flat, is very often a swollen lithium battery pushing up from underneath — stop charging it and bring it in, because a swelling pouch cell is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one. Charging faults split by connector: on barrel-jack laptops we test the adapter under load first, then the DC jack, which wears loose after years of plugging in; on newer machines that charge over USB-C, the same wiggle-to-charge symptom means the port itself is worn, the identical fault we fix on phones.
